5 Reasons Your Guests Won’t Dance At Your Wedding

As a Houston Wedding Planner, I get asked a lot about how to ensure guests get on the dance floor when it opens at a wedding reception. Here are the five most common reasons I see it happening, in my experience, at weddings…

  1. Your Wedding DJ or Band Sucks

I know that sounds harsh, but if you were to ask me what the five reasons were that someone’s wedding fell apart, I would say that it is probably because the wedding planner sucked. The music entertainment vendor is responsible for keeping that party atmosphere going at your wedding reception.

2. You Allow Wedding Guests To Make Requests

Usually what happens when you allow requests, is Aunt Linda and Uncle Bob run up to the Wedding DJ and request music from a genre or decade that the majority of your guests find difficult to dance to. So, if you’re concerned about guests having a good time at your wedding, I would caution against letting guests request music during your reception.

3. You Aren’t Giving Off A Celebratory Vibe

What I’m talking about is, as the host, are you participating in a celebratory attitude or manner? Or, are you stone-faced with your arms crossed, clearly not having a good time. Your guests will certainly feed off of your energy at your wedding. If there is a feeling of displeasure felt amongst your guests, they’ll likely be slow to get on the dancefloor at your wedding.

4. You Micromanaged Your Wedding Music Provider

This may be controversial, but I think micromanaging your DJ or Band can often negatively impact the guest experience at your wedding. With that being said, I understand that your wedding is your day, so you get to select the music you don’t want to hear. However, if you’re reading this, then that tells me that you do care about guests having a good time during your wedding, and you may be seeing a conflict between guest experience and your musical taste. I think you should absolutely have a “Do Not Play List” at your wedding. I would caution against taking out entire genres or decades though. If you take entire catalogs out of your wedding music possibilities, it becomes really hard for a wedding DJ to use their tools and knowledge to get the guests on your dancefloor.

5. Your Guests Are Boring

Who doesn’t want to be happy and jovial at a wedding reception? If you’ve taken care around making sure that the first four tips are followed, then I’m left to blame your guests for why they aren’t on the dancefloor!

I recently answered a question similar to this on my TikTok channel, watch it here. If you’re concerned about giving your guests a great experience at your upcoming Houston wedding, then my team are the right planners for you! Explore our wedding planning packages!
